Ruth Madoff, armed with a degree in nutrition, was the Secretary and Treasurer of the "Bernard L. and Ruth Madoff Foundation".
The website GrantsDirect.com shows the Madoff Foundation had assets valued at about $19 million in 2007. Maybe it's me. I tend to believe that when my Foundation edges up toward $19 million in assets, I will want to name as Treasurer someone whose academic and professional credentials are not food-centric.
Its Contributions Gifts, Grants Paid fluctuated: $95,000 (2007); $1,277,600 (2006); $303,700 (2005); $5,578,564 (2004); $6,452,433 (2003); $521,750 (2002); $599,776 (2001); $220,000 (2000). Here again, when my foundation sends out a million bucks, or five, I suspect I will want my Treasurer to be someone who does not, like Ruth, describe her occupation as "Homemaker" on political giving reports.
The Madoffs' priorities were overwhelmingly health related. Over 78% were in the category of Health - General and Rehabilitative.
And, they had a serious leaning toward Florida. The Foundation's geographic giving pattern showed more than 78% were Florida bound, compared to 18% in hometown New York.
