Yesterday, an "esthetician" at a Flushing, NY Spa - loosely defined - was sentenced to five (5) years in jail for practicing medicine without a license and endangering client lives. (Cheers to the DA for going after her.)
Spa-lady gave two clients in their 20's cosmetic injections. Spa-lady told them she could address their facial imperfections. She claimed to be injecting collagen and things that fill-in wrinkles and poof-out lips. The DA's press release said spa-lady held out the promise that she could provide these 20-somethings "a more beautiful, youthful appearance".
Post spa-treatments, the young ladies had pain, infections and distortion on their face and lips. Both were permanently scarred and have had multiple facial surgeries. The DA said their lips were deformed and they lost some lip function. Eating, drinking, speaking. The substance surgeons later removed from their faces was consistent with silicone.
There were a few little signs that, in hindsight anyway, might have been a tip off that you can't buy youth and beauty in Flushing for $2,000. None change the fact that they were victims.
1. Spa-lady's spa was located at the same address as her house. Lesson: When buying youth and beauty in NY, lean toward tall buildings that give you a lift in a beautiful wood-grain elevator.
2. Spa-lady told her victims she worked with her brother, a Doctor. Brother Doctor never gave a treatment. Never showed up. He is a licensed NY State psychiatrist. Had he appeared, the most he could have done was ask these 20-somethings how their faces make them feel. Lesson: When someone is about to inject foreign substances into you and speaks of phantom Doctors, flee as if someone is about to inject foreign substances into you and speaks of phantom Doctors.
3. Spa-lady tried to sell youth to the young. Lesson: When you are 20-something, you own youth. Go home. Grab a hand mirror. Adore it.
